How to Potty Train a Shih Tzu Puppy

The way of crate training your Shih Tzu puppy is the most thriving technique to get the job done carefully and fast. This means that he will remain crated in a little wire crate except you are playing with him and your eyes are not leaving him.  In other words, don’t let him runs loose just because he is in the similar room as you, even if you are doing something else.  If he will go to the bathroom corner while you are not looking, he possibly starts to assume that it is the area he should continue to go.

Start by taking him out each hour in the same door and to the same area in the backyard. If you plan to paper train him, then you should take him to the paper every hour.  Shih Tzu puppies have a nature to keep their sleeping area clean. They will hold it as long as they can until they can ease themselves somewhere else. By nature, your crates purpose is to reduce the accidents while potty training your Shih Tzu puppy during the first few weeks.

There are certain times that he must be taken out of the crate in order to avoid accidents. Let him out first thing in the morning, after each mealtime, after each playtime and before sleeping. Rotating and sniffing is a sign that he needs to go out for a potty.

Always give him food and water at the same time every day.  If he eats on a schedule, then he will begin to ease himself on a schedule also. Allow him to poop for 5 minutes but if he doesn't reduce, then bring him inside the house and hold him in your knee for 5 minutes. Do not put him down on the floor because this would give him a great chance to have an accident on your floor.  After the 5 minutes on your knee is over, bring him outside the house again for 5 minutes. Keep on repeating this until he does his responsibility outside.  After he reduces effectively outside, you must praise him or give him a reward like giving him time to play with you. If he is not ready to eliminate for 15-20 minutes after eating, then you should wait for about 10-15 minutes also before you initiate the “taking outside” process.

I also discover that it helps to utilize a work out pen outside for your Shih Tzu puppy to reduce in.  By putting him in a work out pen it limits him not to be distracted by anything outside. If he becomes distracted, he will not remember why he is outside for.  Once he is back inside your home, he will recall and he will have an accident.

If he had a problem with messing in his cradle during night time, you must give him water 2-3 hours before bedtime. This will give him a chance to empty his bladder before bedtime.

When he commits an accident, do not scold or beat him. Clean his mess quickly because this will teach him not reduce his waste inside and plus beating him will make him fear you. Besides Shih Tzu are smart dogs they are fast learners in terms of potty training.

So whether it is paper pad or crate training you apply. I hope that this will be helpful to you in potty training your Shih Tzu puppy as it goes much more quickly and smoothly.
